Kenwood House and Hampstead
Members from
Cobbett’s Wey Decorative and Fine Arts Society enjoyed a real treat when
they visited Kenwood House. Andrew Davies introduced them to one of the
finest collection of Old Master paintings given to the British nation in
the twentieth century; including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Gainsborough,
Reynolds, Turner and Van Dyck. The collection was formed around 1890 by
Edward Cecil Guinness, first Earl of Iveagh and Chairman of the world's
most successful brewery. After his death in 1925 the house was opened
to the public and today Kenwood stands in 112 acres of stunning gardens
and ancient woodland. Afterwards they enjoyed a fascinating tour in the
spring sunshine among Hampstead's charming homes. It was a wonderful
experience of beautiful art set in a charming house, topped with a day
in Andrew's scintillating and informative company.
