Cobbett’s Wey DFAS had the most wonderful day at Highgrove Gardens
on Friday 24th April 2009. Twenty five members had been chosen by
ballot to travel to the Prince of Wales’ stunning gardens and were
taken on a fascinating tour lasting 2hrs. We were blessed with a
fine bright day which enhanced all the spring flowers and fresh new
leaves. We were led by Professor Christopher Colton through fifteen
spectacular ‘rooms’ as the gardens revealed series of different
canvasses from woodland glens, azalea walkways, sundial garden, rose
pergolas and topiary...... There were sculptures, special
fountains and features carefully worked into each area, all
specially treasured gifts given to the Prince of Wales and others
from students of the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.
The Prince has spent over 27yrs transforming parts of the grounds of
Highgrove into an innovative organic garden. He is committed to
conserving Britain’s natural heritage, and also uses the garden as a
conservation area for endangered varieties of plants, flowers and
trees. All the members enjoyed a most welcome cup of tea and an
opportunity to browse the Highgrove shop, buy the home produced
Duchy range of goods and dream that our purchased plants would go
someway to transforming our own gardens!
