Cobbett’s Wey Decorative and Fine Arts Society offers the
opportunity to learn about a diverse range of subjects. Their recent
trip to the College of Arms in London allowed members to enjoy a
visit not available to the public. With the guidance of the
Bluemantle Pursuivant Michael Peter O'Donoghue, they were able to
explore the fascinating world of heraldry. For most of the time
since their incorporation in 1484 heralds have been members of the
Royal Household, directly appointed by the Sovereign on the
recommendation of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal. Peter explained
that his salary from the Crown amounts to the princely sum of £13.95
per annum, but of course he does a great deal of private work.
Having examined coats of arms from the 14th century, members then
were able to look at Sir Alan Sugar’s coat of arms!
