Lecture
A Organic Gem Materials
On Wednesday 23rd November the Cobbett's
Wey Farnham Evening DFAS met for their monthly lecture at the Farnham
Sixth Form College. The talk was given by Maggie Campbell Pederson FGA,
ABIPP on the subject of Organic Gem Materials. By means of her excellent
slides she re-introduced our members to many well known organic
materials such as amber, jet, ivory, bone, antler, horn, tortoiseshell,
pearls, coral and shell.
Organic materials have been used for decorative purposes for thousands
of years and their popularity has meant that some of the species have
been hunted almost to extinction. Ivory has been fashioned into carvings
and mother of pearl used in jewellery and furniture. Other materials
have been used to make utilitarian items such as shoe horns and spoons
or used as status symbols from animal or whale teeth and tusks worn as
necklaces or a headress. Sometimes bridal or ceremonial wear came from
shells and feathers and mourning jewellery has been fashioned from jet
(coal) and human hair. However, man has been very successful in copying
and making clever faked gem materials such as amber jewellery and pearl
necklaces.
The talk was judged by our Members to be an outstanding lecture which we
all greatly enjoyed. Our next lecture, "What the Dickens - The Life &
Times of Charles Dickens" by Jane Tapley, will be on Wednesday 14th
December at 7.30pm followed by seasonal refreshments. Do come and join
us, ring Kay on 01252 793811 or email: cwdfas1@yahoo.co.uk
