Cobbett’s Wey DFAS January 2005 Lecture

Breaking the Ice

The 2005 lecture season began on 26 January with a topical theme of 'In the Bleak Midwinter: Artists' Responses to Snow'. Ann Clements enchanted the audience with a selection of pictures from 13th century up to 20th century showing not only how the painting of landscapes changed through the ages, but also the use of different painting techniques to bring snow and ice to life. The lecture began with an illustration from the Duc de Berry's Book of Hours showing the earliest depiction of snow. She continued with slides of work by Brueghel, Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir to name but a few.

Newcomers to the society chatted with members over a glass of wine before being formally welcomed by the chairman, Anne Vardon.

The launch of the Cobbett's Wey website was announced. This has the current lecture programme on it with details of the lectures and visits, notes about the society and a comments page.

Members were reminded of the special interest day at Winchester Cathedral on 26 February.
